<p class="MsoNormal"><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'">We encourage all Democrats in the San Ramon Valley to join us at our meetings and to bring their neighbors and friends.  </span><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'">Our meeting last month was the first at the Crow Canyon Country Club and everyone in attendance voiced their approval of the venue and the meal, as well as the speaker, Rob Kessler, Superintendant of the San Ramon Valley Unified School District.</span></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"> <font color="#999999"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'">This meeting will feature Gulia McPherson with Care USA, who will share her agency&#8217;s involvement in dealing with the world food crisis. </span><span><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font color="#999999"><span> <o:p></o:p></span></font></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'">Giulia is the Advocacy Alliances Manager for CARE <st1:country-region u2:st="on"><st1:place u2:st="on">USA</st1:place></st1:country-region>.<span>  </span>She d<span>esigns and implements strategies for engaging and mobilizing key constituencies through alliances with affinity groups – particularly those focused on youth and women.</span><span>  </span>Prior to assuming this role in January 2008, Giulia was the Legislative Communications Coordinator for CARE based in <st1:place u2:st="on"><st1:city u2:st="on">Washington</st1:city>, <st1:state u2:st="on">D.C.</st1:state></st1:place><span>  </span>She has extensive experience in research, analysis and communications related to legislative issues pertinent to CARE’s advocacy agenda.<span>  </span>For four years, Giulia coordinated CARE’s annual National Conference and led efforts to educate and mobilize the CARE Action Network, CARE’s grassroots volunteer community.</span><span><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><font color="#999999"><span style="font-size: 10pt; font-family: 'Arial','sans-serif'"><u3:p></u3:p>Before joining CARE, Giulia worked for an Italian NGO at both their headquarters in <st1:country-region u2:st="on">Italy</st1:country-region> and field office in <st1:place u2:st="on"><st1:city u2:st="on">Lima</st1:city>, <st1:country-region u2:st="on">Peru</st1:country-region></st1:place>.<span>  </span>Prior to her time spent abroad, Giulia worked for the Nonprofit Sector &amp; Philanthropy Program at The Aspen Institute in <st1:place u2:st="on"><st1:city u2:st="on">Washington</st1:city>, <st1:state u2:st="on">D.C.</st1:state></st1:place><span>  </span>She has a Bachelors degree in Political Science from <st1:place u2:st="on"><st1:placename u2:st="on">Villanova</st1:placename> <st1:placetype u2:st="on">University</st1:placetype></st1:place> and a Masters in International Development Studies from The George Washington University.</span><span><o:p></o:p></span></font></p>

Professor Michelson received her Ph.D. from Yale in 1994 and has held teaching positions at California State University, Fresno, the University of Illinois at Chicago, and Lawrence University at Appleton, Wisconsin.  She joined the faculty of California State University East Bay in 2004.  </font></span><span class="664325423-30082007"><font size="2" face="Arial">Professor Michelsen has published over sixteen articles on Ethnicity in American Politics.  Her special interest is the Latino impact on politics in the U.S.Â  </font></span><span class="664325423-30082007"><font size="2" face="Arial">Her most important award of $350,000 came in 2005 from the James Irvine Foundation to design an evaluation of voter mobilization activities by 10 major community organizations focusing on increasing turnout of low-propensity ethnic voters (African-American, Latino, Asian-American), and young people, in the June and November 2006 elections as well as some local elections in spring 2007. </font></span><span class="664325423-30082007"><font size="2" face="Arial"> We are lucky to have her with us in September! <a href="http://srvdc.net/2007/09/07/september-27-meeting-at-mudds-on-immigration/#more-54" class="more-link">(more&#8230;)</a></p>
