A Record of Impressive Accomplishment

As a member of the California Assembly Education Committee, as the former head of President Clinton’s Western Regional Office of the U.S. Department of Education, and as former Mayor of Berkeley, Loni Hancock has devoted much of her career to developing public policies that support and improve public schools and education in the East Bay and throughout California.

• Loni launched after-school, early reading preparation, college preparedness, and other initiatives. She helped schools in California receive millions of dollars in federal education funding.

• As a member of the Assembly Committee on Education, Loni fought against tuition increases, elimination of outreach programs, and deep cuts to community college, California State University, and University of California budgets.

• Loni has served five years as Chair of the Assembly Select Committee on Bridging the Achievement Gap. To help prepare our young people for the jobs of the future she authored California’s exciting new law to expand hands-on learning and career technical education, so as to lower the unacceptably high dropout rate and better prepare our young people for college and careers.

• She introduced legislation to more closely align California’s standardized testing requirements with federal requirements to lessen the burden on our teachers and students.

• She introduced legislation, which was ultimately incorporated in the state school bond measure passed in 2006, to encourage “green schools.”

• As Mayor of Berkeley Loni brought city funding to open a health clinic at Berkeley High School, to provide all students with access to healthcare.

• In recent legislative sessions she authored and introduced legislation, passed by the Assembly, to provide public funding for political campaigns of candidates running for public office, so as to overcome the overwhelming effects of private and corporate lobbyists on the elective process.

In 2008 Loni intends to run for the State Senate seat to be vacated by Senator Don Perata if he is termed out according to current law. If instead a proposed change in the law makes it possible for him to retain his seat, Loni will campaign to retain her seat in the Assembly
